Rick Mearns has been making ‘smiles appear’ on people’s faces since he was a kid. At just 10 years old, Rick was bitten by the magic bug. Much like Spider-Man, he quickly discovered that with great power comes… well, some really cool magic tricks. While his newfound powers helped him break out of his shyness, they didn’t exactly win over the "nice-looking babes" he had in mind.
By 17, Rick picked up another kind of magic wand—drumsticks—and started rocking out in bar bands and even a touring recording band that crisscrossed Canada. Though his passion for magic took a backseat, it never left the tour bus completely.
From there, Rick then took up guitar and singing, feeling that a singing drummer would be more beneficial than a non-singing drummer. One thing led to another, and from 1984 to 1998, Rick took his skills as a singer/guitar player and began touring both BC and Alberta in his own one-man band. On his breaks, he’d pull out his deck of cards to dazzle audiences with jaw-dropping card tricks.
Rick admits this chapter of his life was “the best time ever.” But after 14 years, the road started to feel a little less golden as the money began to dwindle. At this point, Rick came off the road and began his new career, going back to his first love—close-up magic.
Since then, Rick has become one of Vancouver's most sought-after close-up magicians, performing everything from high-end corporate events, to entertaining the regulars at his steady stream of restaurant and pub gigs. Rick has also won countless awards for his expertise and was recently voted as Vancouver's Top Close-Up Magician.
Outside of magic, Rick wears many hats—sometimes literally, depending on the gig. He does session work as a drummer and a bass player, attends jam sessions, a novice photographer and videographer, and even moonlights as a sound tech for local bands. Additionally, Rick has earned a reputation for hosting some of the best-run jam sessions in the Vancouver area.
In an effort to keep this bio as honest as possible, Rick also acknowledges his struggles with procrastination and staying organized—though these are more of a home-life quirk and never get in the way of his magic business. But hey, nobody’s perfect—even magicians.
